Nottingham Optics & Photonics – ECR Voices

About

This space highlights the achievements, activities, and perspectives of students and early-career researchers at the University of Nottingham (UoN) working in optics and photonics. Whether it’s a recent publication, a social initiative, or a spotlight on someone’s journey, this page brings student voices to the forefront.

The content is coordinated by the Nottingham Optics and Photonics Society (NOPS), a student-led chapter dedicated to building a collaborative and inclusive optics community across UoN.

Optics & Photonics Research Showcase – July 2024

This cross-faculty event brought together students and staff across the UoN to celebrate innovative research in optics and photonics. Organised by the Optics & Photonics Research Committee, the showcase featured a poster competition, a Three Minute Thesis challenge, and an art contest inspired by light and vision.

Winners:
  • Three Minute Thesis: Ruirong Gong (PGR), Finlay Nelson (PGR)
  • Poster Competition: Callum Wilson (PGR), Karen Regules-Medel (PGR)
  • Art Competition: Cristina Cortes-Salas (PGR), Raihan Goni (PGR)

Celebrating Engineering Research 2025 – OPG Winner, Best Poster

OPG Winner:
Karen Regules-Medel (PGR)

The Engineering Research Futures committee recognised the most impactful PGR research at this cross-faculty event. Karen’s poster was selected as the overall winner for its interdisciplinary innovation.

Introducing Nottingham Optics & Photonics Society (NOPS)

We’re excited to share that a new student-led initiative has been launched at the University of Nottingham: the Nottingham Optics & Photonics Society (NOPS). This new chapter intends to bring together undergraduates, postgraduates, and early-career researchers from across UoN who are working in or passionate about optics and photonics.
Our mission is to create a connected, inclusive, and collaborative student community — one that supports academic and personal development through networking, peer-led events, and interdisciplinary exchange.
Whether you’re modelling light-matter interactions, developing imaging systems, or exploring quantum optics, you’ll find a space here to share your work and connect with peers.

This space is open to all UoN students in optics-related fields. If you have something to celebrate or share, please get in touch with the NOPS team!
